Barry Goldwater (born January 2, 1909) is an American politician and former military officer from the Republican Party. After serving in World War II, he entered politics in 1949 by being elected to the Phoenix City Council and later became a senator in 1953.

History[]

"A Christian, A Jew, A pilot and a Senator walk into a bar in DC. 'What can I get you Mr Goldwater?' asks the tender" thus goes one of the many jokes that Barry Morris Goldwater tells about himself, and it reflects the complicated and colourful background of the main and dominating political boss of the Southern and Western Wings of the R-D Coalition. Born in the former Territory of Arizona in 1909 to a Jewish father and Episcopalian mother who ran a department store together, the young Goldwater lived a live of unremarkable obscurity until the breakout of the Second World War, when he would become a reserve officer in the USAAF and a pilot in the Ferry Command.

Moving supplies around the various warfronts in Asia and Europe moulded Goldwater's latter loathing to the fascist powers and his personal animosity to perceived idleness of isolationism within the Dewey Administration. Following defeat in 1945, Goldwater was propelled with his harsh rhetoric of social conservatism to the Senate in 1953 usurping senior Democrat, Ernest McFarland by a narrow majority in his home state of Arizona.

Goldwater rapidly rose to become a influential figure of the Democratic bloc in the R-Ds resisting recruitment by the Republicans, who he harboured resentment to due to disagreements with Eisenhower, and the NPP who he views as too fixated on Japan alone and dominated by socialist radicals. His charisma and fiery presence has chartered him to the highest echelons of political power with some questioning a potential nomination for the presidency

In-game[]

If elected, Goldwater can implement 'Reganomics', an economic model developed by his Secretary of the Treasury Donald Regan. This model consists of minimal government expending, supply-side economics and deregulation. On the alternative, Goldwater can choose Bennett's internationalist economic policies which focus on trade with the Organization of Free Nations and the reimplementation of the Gold Standard. Goldwater can also create the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), increase funding for National Parks, and pass strict pollutant control legislation. Should he choose, Goldwater can also engage in corrupt activities against the Communist Party USA and the All-American National Vanguard in order to discredit then, although this can backfire on him potentially leading to further disunity amongst the American people.

Trivia[]

  • The "Reganomics" Don Regan promotes are likely a reference to the real life "Reaganomics", economic policies that, while implemented by the real life Don Regan, were named after the president he served as Secretary of the Treasury under, Ronald Reagan (a position he held from 1981 to 1985; he also held the position of Chief of Staff from 1985 to 1987).
