Biography[]

Early life[]

Carlos Frederico Werneck de Lacerda was born in 1914 to a family of communist tradition, with the "Frederico" being a tribute to Friedrich Engels and the "Carlos" being a tribute for Karl Marx. He graduated as a professional of "Social Ciences" on the National Law Faculty of Rio.

Political Career[]

Carlos Lacerda began his career back in 1930 by planning a march by the unemployed of the Rio demanding the newly inaugurated government of Getúlio Vargas to take action against the Great Depression. In 1934 he was a founding member of the left wing "Aliança Nacional Libertadora" party, taking part on the failed 1935 communist uprising against Vargas government. In 1939 he officially broke with communism, declaring that such doctrine would bring a dictatorship that would be even worse than the New State under Vargas. In 1949, after repeatedly calling for a military coup to oust Vargas, he suffered an attempt on his life by Climério, a member of Vargas's security team, under the orders of Gregório Fortunato, leader of Vargas' personal security. Vargas didn't order nor was aware of the life attempt, but this caused enough political outrage to cause a fast coup that removed himself from power. Gregório has since teen been elected as a deputee and later governor of Guanabara, and plans to run for President on the 1965 election.
