Phyllis Schlafly is an American conservative firebrand. She is a potential 1972 presidential candidate.

Biography[]

As President: To the glee of her supporters and horror of her opponents, Phyllis Schlafly has done the impossible. The firebrand conservative has vanquished the Kingmakers and become president of the United States.

A few years ago, the idea would have been absurd. In the 50s, Schlafly was little known outside of Midwestern right-wing circles. She worked as a conservative researcher and activist. Together with her husband, she authored a report for the bar association on communist and fascist infiltration. She ran two campaigns for Congress—in Illinois and Missouri—both of which she lost. Her books on national defense earned mild interest.

The chaos of the 1960s changed everything. Schlafly gained a following in 1960 when she led a protest against the RDC's decision to add a plank demanding action on civil rights. Her book "A Choice Not an Echo" denouncing liberal corruption and "New York kingmakers" was influential in the Republican Party's decision to select Barry Goldwater as its nominee. Global chaos earned her writings denouncing the Establishment's "America last foreign policy" newfound attention. By the time she defected to the Nationalist Party over their "feckless internationalism" and "assault on Christian family values," Schlafly had become an icon for millions of disaffected whites furious about a country that seemed to be leaving them behind. She exploited that deep sense of grievance to seize the Nationalist nomination, the NPP's support, and then the presidency.

Now an unrepentant reactionary with no elected experience stands in the most powerful office of the nation. Her ascension promises to introduce America to a new type of struggle: a culture war.
