The New Order: Last Days of Europe Wiki

Richard Nixon (born January 9, 1913) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party, who has been serving as the 36th and current president of the United States since his inauguration on January 20, 1961. His predecessor was Estes Kefauver.

Early-life

Childhood

Richard Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California, US in a house that was built by his father. Nixon’s early life was marked by hardship. His younger brother, Arthur had died in 1925 when he was twelve. Nixon was offered a tuition grant to attend Harvard University but his brother Harold's continued illness and the need for their mother to care for him meant Richard was needed at his father’s store.

Early adulthood

He remained in his hometown and attended Whittier College and graduated in 1934. He also attended Duke University and graduated in 1937. After graduating from Duke, Nixon initially hoped to join the FBI. He received no response to his letter of application and learned years later that he had been hired, but his appointment had been canceled at the last minute due to budget cuts. In January 1938, Nixon was cast in the Whittier Community Players production of The Dark Tower. There he played opposite a high school teacher and future wife named Thelma "Pat" Ryan.

Military service

In January 1942, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Nixon took a job at the Office of Price Administration. In his political campaigns, Nixon would suggest that this was his response to Pearl Harbor, but he had sought the position throughout the latter part of 1941. Both Nixon and his wife believed he was limiting his prospects by remaining in Whittier. He was assigned to the tire rationing division, where he was tasked with replying to correspondence. He did not enjoy the role, and four months later applied to join the United States Navy.

Nixon sought a commission in the Navy. His application was successful, and he was appointed a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S Naval Reserve on June 15, 1942. Nixon was later promoted in 1943 to lieutenant and later again in 1945 to lieutenant commander. He served with distinction in the war and later resigned his commission on New Year's Day 1946.

Post-war (1946-present)

Presidency (1961-present)

Richard Nixon won the 1960 presidential election against Henry M. Jackson and the National Progressive Pact. One of his first priorities after his landslide victory was ensuring that the Republican Party maintained their electoral stranglehold. With the support of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, files have been taken, wiretaps deployed, people of interest blackmailed, and the NPP's image tarnished.

After the 1960 landslide victory against the newly-formed NPP two years earlier, Nixon’s approval ratings have plummeted, in no small part due to allegations of corruption, constant NPP protests, and Vice President John F. Kennedy constantly taking praise for Nixon’s actions (intentionally or not). But the most pressing domestic issue is that of civil rights, a slow 20-year build up finally coming to a head.

President Nixon, in his infinite wisdom, has decided to toe a middle line between full-scale integration and bending to the segregationists. Despite easing the fears of civil rights leaders and rallying the support of segregationists, the nation has experienced a rash of protests and riots over recent months, and the violence shows no sign of abating.

Aside from the issue of civil rights, foreign policy is one of Nixon’s biggest points that he was elected on. Rather than retreating into isolation or storming lost American land by force, the President proposed a new strategy for the Cold War, one that President Eisenhower laid the groundwork for--Containment Theory. American troops will be deployed anywhere the Nazi or Japanese empires attempt to expand, along with spies and diplomats. A full-scale, multi-spectrum offensive will be conducted in the shadows against fascism, and America will win.

Nixion can not do much other then FIghting the Malay war, Being in charge of civil rights, and Being in charge when the SAW and Madagascar war beings.

Trivia

Nixon's real-life presidency, while later than in The New Order, fared somewhat similar - he focused on diplomacy (most notably, opening diplomatic relations with communist China in an attempt to coax the Soviet Union to opening diplomacy with the United States). Similarly, he was forced to resign after the nature of the dirty tricks he used to keep tabs on his opponents (the Democrats) were revealed. Unlike in TNO, however, he served one full term and was re-elected.

In-Game Description

Richard Milhous Nixon is a complicated figure. Originally a Representative, and then Senator from California, he rapidly rose through the ranks of Congress through skilled political maneuvering. During his time as a Senator, Nixon worked closely with Joe McCarthy in carrying out the Grey Scare, working to root out suspected fascists in government. And while he didn't share the spotlight to the same extent as McCarthy did, nobody doubts that Nixon is still an anti-fascist crusader through and through.

A lifelong member of the Republican Party, Nixon has never been totally comfortable working alongside the Democrats. The broad popularity of the National Progressive Pact dictates that they must, however, and the coalition ticket that won him the 1960 election has made his presidency a living hell. John F. Kennedy's position as the Vice President has driven a wedge in the Executive Branch, as his own magnetic charisma and stunning competence have taken the spotlight away from Nixon more than once.

As much as Nixon wants to focus on foreign policy, so he can act to undermine the unstable German and Japanese empires, domestic affairs have gotten in the way. Civil rights issues can no longer be ignored, as racial tensions flare and people demand action, one way or another. While Nixon has been reluctant to endorse either segregation or integration, staying on the fence is becoming increasingly costly.

Of course, Nixon is also doing what he can to keep the NPP down, including some... extralegal means. With challengers coming at him from all sides, including within the White House, Nixon will have a hell of a time trying to keep the ship of state steady.
