Zlatoust, officially the Zlatoust Republic, is a warlord state in western Russia. It is bordered to the south by Magnitogorsk, to the east by Sverdlovsk and Yugra, to the west by Order of Saint George and the Aryan Brotherhood; and the Ural League to the south-west.

History

Zlatoust is a weapon manufacturing and merchant state located within the Ural mountain range in Russia. Formed after the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Yevgeny Dragunov was a senior armorer in the Red Army. Credited with creating many popular fire arms such as the legendary SVD Dragunov sniper, Dragunov himself was stationed at the major industrial and firearm making city of Zlatoust during the Great Patriotic War, far away from the destruction of the front lines. As the Union collapsed, Dragunov found himself as the de facto mayor of the city. Looking to provide stability and income for Zlatoust and the surrounding areas, weapon production increased drastically until it became the territories major export. Selling weapons to nearly all in warlord Russia, this allowed the city to establish its self as a stable and prosperous state within Russia. Dragunov's fortunes increased massively when esteemed arms-designer Mikhail Kalashnikov arrived in Zlatoust. The two developed a quick friendship and would use their technical skills to make even better weapons. The weapon magnate diarchs of Zlatoust had assured their indisputable dominance in the cities politics thanks to the immense wealth generated from selling weapons to other warlords. In fact, Kalashnikov's AK would became such a popular weapon, it is now prominently featured on the flag of the state. The other logo on the flag is of the Izhmash plant, being the largest factory that produces weapons for the trade.

Sometime in the 1950s, the criminal empire of Yugra and the leadership of Zlatoust came to an agreement where Yugra would offer protection in exchange for weapons and trade. This effectively turned Yugra into a client state of Zlatoust.

Unlike other warlords, Dragunov has no illusions of grandeur to reunite Russia or sack Germania. While he wouldn't mind those, he is preoccupied with bringing profit and stability to Zlatoust. These morally dubious acts has made the city into an island of prosperity in the chaos of warlord Russia, and Dragunov is always eager to find new customers. At least for the foreseeable future, business is expected to boom as warlord states look to reunite the motherland, but Dragunov must tread carefully, as the users of his weapons may turn them on their makers.

In-game

At the start of the game, like the other playable Russian warlords, Zlatoust will begin independent, and will have the ability to provide weapons to other warlords in the western half of Russia - warlords in Central Siberia and the Far East are too far for them to distribute arms to.

In terms of interactions with other warlords, they are one of the three choices the West Russian Revolutionary Front has for dealing with food shortages (the other two being Vologda, favored by Mikhail Tukhachevsky, and Komi, favored by Georgy Zhukov). Additionally, they are usually the last warlord each nation from West Siberia will have to fight before they can unify the region; Sverdlovsk can propose peaceful unification, while Tyumen and Omsk must conquer them.

Zlatoust has no desire to unify Russia, and instead serves as the de-unifier of Western Siberia. Should they manage to defeat the warlord that attacks them, Zlatoust will annex some territories on the Urals, rebrand itself the Ural Republic, and form a series of puppets in the rest of Western Siberia, except Vorkuta, which will instead find itself annexed by Onega in the event that country similarly "unifies" its respective region.

Trivia

Due to Zlatoust's unique way of "unifying" West Siberia, it's entirely possible that Russia could end up unable to be unified, provided that certain circumstances occur alongside a Zlatoust "unification" - if Onega also "unifies" West Russia, whoever unifies Central Siberia is unable to defeat the Siberian Workers' Federation when they revolt, and Pavel Sudoplatov's coup is successful (thus resulting in the Divine Mandate of Siberia collapsing), then the entire country will be balkanized in a series of puppet states.
